David Webber, AIA
Webber + Studio, Inc.

To learn more about David, we gave him the Modern Dwelling Questionnaire. We will be asking all our featured Architects these five questions.

Why did you choose architecture as your profession?

Architecture chose ME. From an early age I remember asking my father what you called a person that liked to draw houses and he told me ‘Architect’. It was always unquestionably what I wanted to do and what I knew I was going to do. It was not until I was much older that I realized that people who always knew what they wanted to do were a minority.

What is your favorite project that you have completed? What makes it special?

Currently we have a few favorites. One is a beautiful new house we did in Tarrytown in Austin. Another is a large remodel and addition we are doing for a client in Horseshoe Bay Texas. What those two projects have in common is that they were both for amazing clients. We are also excited about a couple of new houses coming up called Fairfield and Nuevo because these two projects really exemplify and explore our fascination with how we design our buildings to interlock and thereby connect with outdoor space.

What building do you wish you had designed?

Anything by Shigeru Ban… or the Rohner Port Building in Fussach, Austria by Baumschlager and Eberle. The Rohner is an extruded concrete tube that hovers unsupported for a seemingly impossible length over the ground…. it is amazing.

What is your favorite city?

Rome… with Sydney, Paris, Mykonos, and Seatlle all in the running.

What trends in architecture do you see emerging in the next five – ten years?

The obvious one is sustainability but I think the incorporation of technology and smart/automated buildings will continue to grow a lot.

I also think that because of new building technologies that are based on bio-based oils, polymers and other plastics will be used more so we will see more experimentation in building materials. It should be fun.
